Types of Work Requiring Permits

 

​A permit is required for many types of construction, renovation, and installation projects within the City of Somerset. The list below includes common examples but is not limited to these items. If you are unsure whether your project requires a permit, please contact City Hall before starting work.​

  • Remodels

  • Room additions

  • Flooring

  • Roofing

  • Siding or brick veneer

  • Decks, patios, and patio covers

  • Driveways

  • Sidewalks and other concrete work

  • Sprinkler systems

  • Swimming pools

  • Water heaters

  • Most air conditioning and heating systems

  • Fireplaces

  • Demolition

  • Most plumbing work

  • Electrical repairs or replacements

  • Sheds or accessory buildings (new or relocated)

  • Garages and carports

  • Fences, retaining walls, and landscape walls over two feet
